A 20-year WNC resident, Rich graduated from Western Carolina University with Bachelor's (English, Spanish) and Master's (English) degrees in 2002 and 2004. Following a tour with the Peace Corps in the Kingdom of Jordan, Rich has spent the last five years as a financial advisor specializing in socially-responsible investments at Edward Jones & Co. He lives in Haw Creek with his partner, Lindsay, a public-school teacher, and their four children.

In 2015, Rich's campaign for city council received the endorsements of the AFL-CIO, WNC Central Labor Council, Sierra Club (primary only), NC Representative Susan Fisher, and over 50 business owners and community leaders.
